Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corporation Limited is a Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer based in Dongguan, China. It is a subsidiary of BBK Electronics which is a Chinese multinational technology conglomerate. The products of Oppo comprise of smartphones, audio devices, power banks and other consumer electronics. Oppo was ranked fifth in the list of leading smartphone brands in the year 2019.
History
Oppo was registered in China in the year 2001 but launched in the year 2004. It expanded outside China by first introducing its products in Thailand in the year 2009. Since then, the company has spread to 50 countries including India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia and Philippines.
In the year 2016, Oppo became the largest smartphone maker in China with over 200,000 retail locations selling its smartphones. Oppo launched a fast charging technology called VOOC in the year 2014. It is mainly used in the smartphones manufactured by the brands coming under BBK Electronics.
Oppo was fined 43.8 billion rupees by the Government of India in the year 2022 for tax evasion. In Germany, Oppo faced a lawsuit filled by Nokia in the year 2022, accusing the company of using technology patents owned by Nokia without paying a license fee.
Products
Oppo is one of the leading manufacturers of smartphones in the world. The company entered the mobile phone market in the year 2008 by launching its first mobile phone named Smiley Face. Oppo launched its first smartphone in the year 2012 which was named Find. The company added a face beautification technology to its U701 series of mobile phones in the year 2012. In the year 2013, Oppo launched the first of its kind smartphone with a revolving camera and its first operating system named ColorOS. The brand’s first 5G smartphone was launched in the year 2019.
Oppo also manufactures audio devices such as headphones and amplifiers. In the year 2014, Oppo launched a series of high-end headphones and amplifiers with the most prominent ones being the flagship PM-1 and PM-2 headphones and HA-1 desktop amplifier. HA-1 amplifier was replaced by portable HA-2 amplifier in the year 2015.
In the year 2020, Oppo launched its first smartwatch named Oppo Watch in the Chinese market.
