Motorola Inc. was an American telecommunications company founded in the year 1928. In the year 2011, Motorola Inc. split into two independent companies, namely Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions. Google acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012, however in the year 2014, Google sold Motorola Mobility to Lenovo. Thus, while Motorola Solutions remains the successor of Motorola Inc. Motorola Mobility is a subsidiary of a Chinese technology company Lenovo.
History
Motorola was established in the year 1928 as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in the city of Chicago in USA. The company began by manufacturing car radio receivers for the police department and other kinds of wireless equipment. Gradually, the product range also included televisions. Galvin Manufacturing Corporation became Motorola Inc. in the year 1947.
Motorola introduced world’s first portable handheld telephone in the year 1973. It produced its first microprocessor for automobiles, computers and video games in the year 1974. The world’s first commercial cellular device was manufactured by Motorola in the year 1983. In the year 1998, Motorola lost its position as the largest seller of mobile phone handsets in the world to Nokia.
On 4th January 2011, Motorola Inc. officially split into Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions. The cellphone and cable equipment division of Motorola Inc. was put on sale as Motorola Mobility while Motorola Solutions retained the telecommunications and enterprise equipment division of the original Motorola Inc.
Google acquired Motorola Mobility for USD 12.5 billion in the year 2012. In the year 2014, Chinese multinational technology company Lenovo purchased Motorola Mobility from Google for USD 2.91 billion.
Product range
Motorola Mobility manufactures android smartphones. In the Google era, it released Moto X series, Moto G series, Droid mini, ultra and max, Moto E series, Google Nexus 6 and Droid Turbo. The smartphones launched after takeover by Lenovo include Moto Z series, Moto M series, Motorola Razr and Motorola Edge and Edge+. Apart from smartphones, Motorola Mobility also manufactures smartwatches, televisions and smartphone accessories.
Motorola Solutions manufactures software packages for mapping/drones/command centres, two-way radio systems, surveillance cameras, body cameras, public safety radio systems and access control equipment.
