History
Lenovo was founded as a PC sales unit by Liu Chuanzi and his colleagues in the year 1984. The company started manufacturing and selling computers under its own brand name in the 1990s and built up high sales figures by offering lower prices as compared to other companies. By the later years of the 1990s, Lenovo held 43% of the domestic computer market share. A notable early success of the company was the KT8920 mainframe computer. In the year 1996, Lenovo ventured into the laptop market.
Lenovo acquired the personal computers business of the US technology major IBM in the year 2005. This helped the company to enter the global market, helped in no small measure by IBM’s ThinkPad laptop and ThinkCentre desktop lines. As a result of the acquisition, Lenovo became the third largest producer of computers in the world in terms of volumes.
Lenovo entered into a joint venture with the Japanese electronics company NEC to manufacture personal computers. In the year 2012, Lenovo entered the smartphones market again and became the second largest vendor of smartphones just behind Apple in the Chinese market.
In the year 2014, Lenovo purchased Motorola’s smartphone business named Motorola Mobility from Google for USD 2.91 billion.
