Haier is a Chinese multinational consumer electronics and home appliances company founded in the year 1984. The company designs, develops, manufactures and sells refrigerators, air conditioners, microwave ovens, washing machines, dryers, computers, televisions and mobile phones. Haier sells its products in over 160 countries through more than 38,000 retail outlets all over the world.
History
Haier was founded as Qingdao Refrigerator Company in 1984 by Zhang Ruimin who had been appointed as the managing director of an ailing refrigerator factory dating back to 1920s by the Qingdao city government. The first refrigerators were manufactured by Qingdao Refrigerator Company in partnership with German refrigerator company Liebherr.
Qingdao Refrigerator Company was renamed Haier in the year 1992. The company assumed control of many companies such as the washing machines manufacturer Qingdao Red Star Electronics, Qingdao Air Conditioning Plant, Qingdao Electroplating Company and more. Haier expanded to the international market in the 1995-97 period.
Haier entered the US market in 1999 with emphasis on compact refrigerators and electric wine cellars. Later, it began manufacturing full sized refrigerators for the North American market. Haier forayed into the Indian market with the establishment of Haier Appliances India in the year 2004 and by 2015 it had 33 operations all over the country.
Haier became the fourth largest refrigerator manufacturer in the world in the year 2009. As of 2020, Haier was the number one home appliance brand in the world.
Manufacturing facilities
Haier operates manufacturing facilities both in China and other countries. The company opened its first foreign production facility in Indonesia in 1996, followed by Philippines in 1997. In the year 2000, Haier established a manufacturing facility at Camden, South Carolina, USA.
Haier opened its production facilities in Pakistan and Jordan in the years 2002 and 2003 respectively. The company also operates production facilities in Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, South Africa and Nigeria. Overall, Haier has 12 manufacturing facilities outside China.
Products
The flagship products of Haier include smart washing machines, smart refrigerators and smart inverter air conditioners. Other products include smart Android based LED televisions, smart kitchen appliances, smart robot vacuum cleaners, mechanical and digital water heaters and commercial freezers.
