Dell Inc. is an American technology company which designs, develops, manufactures and sells PCs and a host of computer related products such as servers, data storage devices, network switches, computer peripherals software and more. Established in the year 1984, Dell is currently one of the leading computer brands and supplier of personal computers in the world.
History
Dell was founded in the year 1984 by Michael Dell who was a student at the University of Texas. The initial name of the company was PCs Limited and it started out by selling customised PCs directly to the customers. In the year 1985, the company launched its first computer made using its own design, named Turbo PC. The computers were sold directly to the customers on orders and adverts were placed in national computer magazines. Since the company was able to avoid retail costs, it was able to provide high-end PCs at low rates.
PCs Limited became Dell Computer Corporation in the year 1987. Market capitalisation of Dell increased to USD 80 million in the year 1988. Dell released its first notebook computer in 1989 and first colour notebook computer in 1991. In the year 1996, Dell began selling PCs through the online route. In the year 1999, it became the largest PC seller in the United States of America.
Dell expanded its product line in the year 2002 to include televisions, digital audio players, digital cameras and many computer related products. Dell Computer Corporation was renamed Dell Inc. in the year 2003. Dell acquired EMC, an American technology company specialising in enterprise data storage, in the year 2016 for USD 67 billion. As of 2021, Dell had a net worth of over USD 50 billion.
Products
Dells sells its business and home desktops under various brand names such OptiPlex and Dimension. Range of budget and high-end desktops and notebook systems include Inspiron and XPS. The company sells business focused notebooks under the Latitude series. High and medium performance gaming laptops are sold under G series.
Other products include Precision high performance workstations, Force10/PowerConnect network switches and LCD and plasma televisions.
