History
Bigbasket started as a tech startup founded by five entrepreneurs in the year 2011. The major investor was Ascent Capital which invested 10 million dollars into the startup. By the year 2016, Bigbasket was operating in 8 big Indian cities. The Alibaba Group of China invested 300 million dollars into this company in the year 2018 and became the majority stake holder.
In the year 2019, Bigbasket expanded to 25 Indian cities. Due to increased demand for home deliveries during the Covid 19 pandemic, the operations of Bigbasket received a big boost and by the year 2022, this company was receiving 7 million orders each month. Tata Digital, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, acquired 64% shares of Bigbasket in May 2021, thereby becoming the owner.
Large array of products
Bigbasket offers more than 40,000 different items by over 1000 brands. The products encompass fruits, vegetables, spices, meat, rice, dal, toiletries, packaged food, pet food, kitchen essentials, beverages and much more. The products are delivered to the doorsteps of the customers through a large network of delivery executives spread across India.
The main suppliers of Bigbasket are private manufacturers such as HUL, P&G and others along with mills and farmers. The products are stored in warehouses and supplied to the customers as per the orders. Moreover, the company has also entered into deals with over 2000 grocery stores to supply the products more swiftly.
Valuation and Revenues
Bigbasket was valued at USD 950 million in 2018, following the USD 300 million funding by Alibaba Group. The value increased to USD 1.85 billion by the year 2021. As of January 2023, the company is valued at USD 3.2 million.
The revenue model adopted by Bigbasket is lower price high margin. 35% of the revenues of this company comes from private labels.
