Nokia Corporation is a Finnish multinational telecommunications, consumer electronics and information technology company established in the year 1865. It is the pioneer of feature mobile phone technology and was the largest vendor of mobile phones in the world for a decade from the year 1998. However, it lost a huge part of its share in the mobile phone market in the later part of the first decade of the 21st century.
History
Nokia was established in the year 1865 by a mining engineer named Frederick Idestam. It began as a paper mill and expanded to include electricity generation in the year 1902. The company subsequently entered into the rubber market. By the year 1967, Nokia was operating 4 businesses which were rubber, electronics, cable and forestry.
By early 1960s, Nokia had started manufacturing mobile radios, capacitors, telephone switches and chemicals. In the 1980s, Nokia acquired multiple European television manufacturers and became the third largest television producer in Europe. Nokia acquired Mobira telephone company and launched its first mobile phone, the Mobira Senator car phone, in the year 1982.
Nokia developed the GSM network in the 1980s and launched the first of its kind commercial GSM mobile phone named Nokia 1011 on November 1992. Nokia became the best selling mobile phone brand in the year 1998. The company introduced its wireless LAN products in the year 1999.
Due to rapidly declining share in the mobile phones market mainly due to its inability to compete with Android smartphones, Nokia sold its mobile and devices division to Microsoft in the year 2014. Microsoft installed Windows operating system on the Nokia smartphones but Windows smartphones failed to compete with Android smartphones. Microsoft sold the Nokia-branded smartphone business to HMD Global in 2016.
Nokia is now mainly concerned with network equipment manufacturing and IoT devices. However, it holds the patent license for its smartphones sold by other vendors.
Products
HMD sells Nokia smartphones under license. The first Android based Nokia smartphone, Nokia 6, was launched on January 2017. Some of the latest smartphone models include Nokia G42 5G, Nokia G60 5G, Nokia C12 and Nokia C30. Nokia Technologies manufactures tablet computers such as Nokia T10 and Nokia T21, virtual reality cameras, smart televisions and WiFi routers.
Nokia Networks provides wireless and fixed network infrastructure for 5G, 3G, GSM, LTE and other types of radio access networks to network operators and service providers.
