History

When two boyhood friends, R.S. Agarwal, and R.S. Goenka, quit their corporate careers with the Birla Group in 1974 to start Kemco Chemicals, a cosmetic manufacturing business in Kolkata, the Emami Group was born in West Bengal in the mid-1970s. It bought the Himani agriproducts company in 1978. The Emami Group is a vast corporation with prominent leadership positions across various industries. The Group has around 25,000 workers spread across several sites. In 2015, Emami also bought “Kesh King’s” Ayurvedic Hair & Scalp company as part of a commercial plan.

With almost 300 different products, Emami’s portfolio consists of new brands like Emami 7 Oils in One and HE Deodorant, as well as established power names like BoroPlus, Fair and Handsome, Mentho Plus Balm, Navratna, Zandu Balm, and Sona Chandi Chyawanprash. 2008 saw Emami Limited purchase Zandu Pharmaceuticals Ltd., and then in 2015, it purchased Kesh King’s business, making these two acquisitions among the largest in the FMCG sector’s history in India.
