Gas Authority of India Limited, or GAIL, is the Government of India’s central public sector undertaking. It has diversified interests in producing, transmitting, and trading natural gas, natural gas, petrochemicals, petroleum gas, city gas, electricity, and renewable energy such as solar and wind. GAIL is India’s leading natural gas company, with 70% and 50% of the market share in gas transmission and gas trading, respectively. It got the Maharatna status by the GOI in 2013.

History
GAIL was initially known as Gas Authority of India Limited. It came into its present form after incorporation in August 1984 as a central public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. GAIL’s first project was building the 1750-kilometer-long natural gas pipeline, completed in 1991. The company constructed three LPG plants in the 1991-93 period.
Over the years, GAIL has diversified into liquid hydrocarbons, petrochemicals, natural gas, and city gas distribution. The company is also expanding its presence in the renewable energy sector.
Operations
GAIL owns and operates 67% of India’s natural gas pipeline network, about 13,800 kilometers. The company supplies 60 million cubic meters of natural gas daily to customers across India. GAIL also supplies gas to power plants to produce over 4000 MW of electricity and fertilizer plants to produce over 10 million tonnes of urea.
GAIL owns and operates a 2038 km LPG pipeline network and 7 LPG plants across India.
