The Britannia Story
Back in 1892, a bunch of British friends with big dreams and a small pocket of money decided to create biscuits that today steal the hearts of millions in India. They set up their little biscuit-making shop right here in Kolkata, clueless that they were baking the future! Fast forward to 1918, and woah, so much had changed! The Gupta brothers took command of the company, sprinkling in their unique touch and renaming it V.S. Brothers. Then came C.H. Holmes, an English businessman, and together they gave birth to what we now adore as The Britannia Biscuit Company Limited (BBCo). And yep, during the tough times of World War II, our beloved Britannia didn’t just bake; they stood strong with the British Army, filling the soldiers’ tummies with their tasty biscuits.
How Britannia Became An Indian Company?
See, back in the late 70s and early 80s, Britannia was going through some big changes. In 1978, they shared their company with the public, and guess what? A whopping 62% of it was owned by Indians! That was a big sign that Britannia was becoming more of an Indian thing. But, they still had some friends over in the UK, with a company called Associated Biscuits International Limited holding 38% of Britannia. Fast forward to the 90s, and there’s a new player in the game. Nusli Wadia, a big name in the textile world, got a hold of Britannia with a little help from a French food company, Danone. By 2009, the Wadia Group was the main investor in the company, being the biggest owner of Britannia.
