History

In response to the exploitation of small dairy farmers by dealers and agents, Amul was founded on December 19, 1946. Since milk prices were set arbitrarily at the time, Polson effectively had a monopoly on collecting milk from Kaira and the subsequent delivery of that milk to Mumbai.

The organization was started in 1946 by Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel, who also held the position of chairman till his retirement in the 1970s. In 1949, he took on Verghese Kurien as general manager, and Kurien oversaw the cooperative’s marketing and technical initiatives.

M. Dalaya and Verghese Kurien’s work helped the cooperative grow even more. The process by which Dalaya developed buffalo milk into skim milk powder was a technological advance that completely changed India’s organized dairy sector.

Operations and Products

The Gujarat Dairy Cooperatives’ Apex organization, also referred to as “AMUL,” was established with the dual goals of serving the interests of consumers by offering high-quality, reasonably priced goods and giving farmers a fair return on their investment. Not only has India imitated its success, but the remainder of the world looks up to it.

It is the sole marketing company for items with the “Amul” and “Sagar” brands. Operating through 76 sales offices, it has one of the largest dealer networks in India, with 10,000 dealers and 10 lakh retailers. Its product line includes chocolates, butter, milk powder, paneer, milk, ghee, cheese, ice cream, pizza cheese, and traditional Indian sweets, among other things.
