History
In 1911, T. V. Sundram Iyengar started the first bus service in Madurai. He later formed TVS, a transportation company that operated under the Southern Roadways moniker and had a sizable fleet of trucks and buses. In partnership with United Kingdom-based Clayton Dewandre Holdings, Sundaram Clayton was established in 1962.
It produced exhausts, compressors, brakes, and various other auto parts. As part of their new business, the corporation established a plant in Hosur in 1976 to produce mopeds. The TVS 50, the nation’s first two-seater moped, was released from the Hosur, Tamil Nadu, plant 1980. In 1987, a joint venture between Sundaram Clayton Ltd and Suzuki Motor Corporation was established because a technical collaboration with the Japanese car giant Suzuki Ltd. Motorcycles produced for sale started in 1989.
