L&T opened operations in Calcutta (now Kolkata), Madras (now Chennai), and New Delhi following India’s independence in 1947. In 1948, 55 acres of virgin marsh and jungle in Powai, Mumbai, were purchased. Its major industrial center was later moved to an inhospitable marsh. L&T went public in December 1950 with a paid-up capital of 20 lakh ($29,000). In that year, sales revenue totaled 1.09 crore ($160,000). A sizable portion of the business’ Mumbai office relocated to ICI House in Ballard Estate in 1956. The building would eventually be bought by the business and given the new name L&T House, where it now maintains its current headquarters.
